A Teeny-Tiny "Are You Hooked"...Just For You

In the spirit of ramping down for vacation and all that, I offer you the following:

At 9:00 PM EDT today (Tuesday) I will open a 10-minute submission window.

The window will close at 9:10 PM EDT.

I will only accept up to 20 entries.

Qualifications for entering:

*You have a completed manuscript ready for critique.
*You DID NOT participate in last month's Secret Agent round
*You are willing to critique 10 other entries.
*All genres (EXCEPT erotica) of novels will be included (no PBs or shorts).

Send your first 250 words to me at facelesswords(at)gmail.com. DON'T send before 9:00 PM EDT!

I'll post the entries tomorrow and we'll have a fun few days of critting, sans the pressure of a Secret Agent.

Questions in the box, please!

  1. Is this for novels only or can short story manuscripts be entered?

  2. Okay, As I read this post more closely, I do believe I answered my one question....*shrinks away into the shadows*

    Best of luck to everyone!

  3. Can I enter if my opening has only had minor changes since a previous Secret Agent (February)?

  4. Hmm -- should I assume that if my computer says it's 9 p.m. EDT, it's 9 p.m. EDT? Or is there any chance it might be different from your computer's time stamp? ~bites fingernails~

    Great idea, though. Thanks!

  5. When you say completed manuscript, does that mean the total ms? I have 10ish chapters completed, but the whole novel is not complete...

  6. This has nothing to do with your submission post, but I wanted to pass it along and didn't know any other medium to use.

It may be that Tracy Ravenelle at Objective Entertainment is working with Authorhouse as a "marketing" agent or something along that line. It's difficult to say, and I don't want to make any false accusations, but I sent a query to her recently, and she replied with an email indicating the possibility of self-publishing. She asked if she could pass my contact info along to a reputable self-publishing company. I received an email from them today offering their services. Just wanted to pass that info along.

  7. I'm not entering for several reasons, but for those who do, does that mean they can't enter next month's SA contest if they enter this time?

  8. Awww I can't enter! My manuscript is going through a total rewrite right now...

    Great idea though. :)

  9. Michael, perhaps you should contact Victoria Strauss with that information...?

KCA -- Yes, completed manuscript. I'm just being mean this time to cut down on the number of submissions. =D

Stina -- Good question. I would say, if you're planning on entering next month, don't enter this mini-contest. Got a way-cool agent lined up for July, at any rate. ;)

  10. Oh dear. I'd like to enter the July SA, but I don't know if I'll be genre-eligible (let alone if I'd make the cut in the free-for-all rush). Authoress, if you'd like us all to abide by this either-or proposition, perhaps you could add it to the rules on your post? (Not that you should feel obligated to do anything, of course. Just a suggestion.)

  11. I'm in the same boat as Jamie. I'm not sure if I'll be eligible for next month's SA contest depending on what genres are accepted. I'd hate to miss out on this contest and then not be eligible next month.

Is there any way you can tell us in advance what genres will be acceptable without giving away the identity of the SA?

Another problem I've run into with the SA contests is that sometimes I've already submitted to the agent and received a rejection . . . and I don't find out until after the contest is over . . . then the next month is an agent I have on my list but haven't yet submitted to but I wasn't able to submit that month because I submitted the previous month.

Makes things tough come SA time . . . to submit or not to submit . . .

  12. By first, do you mean the prologue if one has one, or from Chapter 1?
