One large paragraph made it harder to read - seemed to fluid for the fast-paced feeling you want to convey.

But I'm tired, so maybe it's just my sleepy eyes having a hard time with the block of text.

Great job! The opening part had some passive phrases you might want to tighten, but other than that, I’d definitely read on.LoriStronginhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10764202539292045963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-91841047447417537332008-10-30T13:47:00.000-04:002008-10-30T13:47:00.000-04:00*disclaimer: no real animals were hurt in the proc...*disclaimer: no real animals were hurt in the process of writing this scene!*

Thanks for all the comments. Yes, the start is a bit choppy (also because the first paragraph is in essence a partial paragraph). But it's late, so maybe I just need to check my dictionary.

The scene is good here, I'm betting it's stellar in text.

The description of the battle isn't bad, but not as descriptive as you could get. That's going to depend on your style. Some people get very poetic with battle, others like nitty-gritty details (red spleen and bloody ears flying). Without seeing the rest of the book I don't know if this balances well with the rest, but, if you describe smells and textures earlier, don't forget them here. War is smelly.Liana Brookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14587774916354749190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-71739368949851312022008-10-29T20:47:00.000-04:002008-10-29T20:47:00.000-04:00Lots of tension. Although I really detest the killing of the horse! Wish it wasn't necessary.

I think if you had left off the last two or three sentences the tension would have remained in place for me a bit longer.Sissyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06307338341018381050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-61369713226673429082008-10-29T18:51:00.000-04:002008-10-29T18:51:00.000-04:00I'm with the others: The last graf here definitely...I'm with the others: The last graf here definitely is your strongest, although I agree with fairchild about the laugh damping some of the threat. On the other hand, people often laugh when they're tense, and Darion's laugh at that moment said a lot about him. ("Exalted" seemed a bit stilted, though.)

You might want to count the number of times you used "his" in the first graf. (For some reason those three "his" close together really stood out.)

Others' comments about the length of the scene, length of sentences and "showing" instead of "telling" what Darion saw are worthwhile suggestions, too. Overall, though, nice. :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-54739207418826206202008-10-29T18:15:00.000-04:002008-10-29T18:15:00.000-04:00I agree that the last paragraph was the best part ...I agree that the last paragraph was the best part and would make me read on, but I had to read back at the start a few times.

I love the last part though.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03216407428320615449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-79986244683386118792008-10-29T17:24:00.000-04:002008-10-29T17:24:00.000-04:00I liked it. The prior paragraphs were choppy and incomplete, detracting from the immediate action. I didn't realize until I read the beginning twice that Darion was in a fight at all. Honestly, I would probably flip a few pages ahead to see whether or not Darion lived before I decided whether to read on or not.sraaschhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02960364630183418763noreply@blogger.com
