The heading mentions that it is historical middle grade but there's no hint of that in the setting that's described here. Feels pretty contemporary.

Also, the emotion seems too much for the event that is actually going on. If she really loved Kai, their goodbye would have been done in private, I'm thinking, not something done in front of parents.

Maybe the time setting would prohibit that but I haven't a sense of when this is so I don't know.

As is, I probably would not read on.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-26886726455241884052009-02-14T15:50:00.000-05:002009-02-14T15:50:00.000-05:00Love this! Kai's comment about the dance and her response -- do you need that? I wonder, actually, whether it would work better jumping straight from the first paragraph to "So this was heartbreak." North or South ?

Sounds like North.

There is a slight disjointed feel in the first paragraph, I'm not sure if that's just because I wanted to be more in the character's place, feeling what she did. You know - being hugged, maybe leaning into the hug a little bit. Or stiffening up, conscious of her parents eyeballs boring holes into her back. And I wanted more of a mental picture of the setting.

The other thing is I didn't realize she was leaving. I thought that he was, until I got down to the last paragraph.

This is something I'd definitely read, and I do like your voice<:Cate Kariaxihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01812494549402252779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3615675676021392217.post-42139819469365032322009-02-11T17:54:00.000-05:002009-02-11T17:54:00.000-05:00I loved this!
