The latch strained; the shutters rattled. Rose longed to throw them wide and let the wind blow away the memory of her mother.

  1. I like the image in the second sentence, but I'm not sure this is where I'd want to begin reading the story. I'd probably read a few more lines to see if there was anything else to hook me.
