Name That Genre #12

TITLE: Adult
GENRE: Secret

The sky peeked into the window, turning from the pale blue of the bright day, to an unnatural forest green. Mela swore, turning her back to the infirmary overcrowded with potential corpses.

Her assistant lingered in the aisle, carrying a bucket of vomit and mumbling about the short supply of beds. “With all these children moaning about, we had to put the babies on the floor. And the elderly—well, time was coming for them one way or another, right?” She looked up to find Mela frozen, and frowned deeply. “What is it now?”

“The spirits are talking.”

Ratu dropped the bucket on the ground, allowing little discolored chunks to splatter onto the hem of her dress. “Well, must we listen? After all they’ve done?”

“They might mean to give us a cure.”

“Or they’re doing what they always do: provoking us.”

  10. Dystopian.

Not sure, though. I'm basing that on the strange color of the sky and all the dying children and elderly.

  11. PARANORMAL FANTASY.

With the spirits talking to people and asked to change things.

  12. Dystopian. With so much death all around, it has the feel of a dystopian novel.

  13. Fantasy, due to "spirits" and a green sky.

  15. Post-apocalyptic

Maybe they've all been bitten and are about to turn into zombies?

  16. Magical Realism

The sky is practically personified, it acts, it turns colors. That's a bit further than fantasy usually takes it, so I'll go for magical realism.

Sky turning green, spirits talking, names of the characters...

  18. Horror.
Weird sky, bucket of body stew, dead and dying. And those spirits speaking up.

  19. Paranormal

The spirits are talking. What I can't decide on if this is historical or dystopian, but I'm certain it's not modern because the infirmary, bucket, and the inability to treat the patients all suggest a lack of modern medicine and technology.

  20. Not sure. Reads Horror-ible to me. But maybe Paranormal (spirits). Maybe historical (during some plague episode).

  21. My guess is Fantasy because of the mention of spirits talking. There are elements of historical with antiquated medical treatment and buckets of vomit splattering on hems of dresses. Could be dystopian, too, because it's obviously not a pretty scene. It's pretty vague so far with a lot of different hints thrown in.

  22. Fantasy/Sci Fi - Ugh...the vomit, the cure, the spirits. Whew. Vivid imagery.

  23. Paranormal.

Because spirits are talking, or at least trying to communicate.

  25. I'd say it was half/half--it's Fantasy! I see why people thought paranormal, you know, ghosts and spirits and such, but that's not the direction of the story. Thanks for all the guesses!
