Name That Genre! #21

TITLE: ADULT
GENRE: SECRET

Dammit! Mabel swore silently as she stepped off the plane and realized that she was sharing her skull again. I thought maybe I’d lost it somewhere over the Pacific.

She spent a moment working through a sense of panic that wasn’t entirely hers. She’d hoped that once she got this far, it would stop pestering her and just let her make a vacation out of this forced march instead.

She looked around for a shuttle to take her to a local hotel, and started toward the advertised “Airporter,” but an involuntary locking of limbs brought her up short. Another of those mental nudges she’d tried so valiantly to ignore over the past couple of weeks finally pushed her out of the terminal toward the rental car counters, and she heaved a sigh. Apparently it wouldn’t allow her to stay here in Hobart, either. Insistent little miscreant, aren’t you?

  1. Don't know.

I'd take a stab at romance or paranormal (or both!) but I'm not sure. It's a good set-up, though.

I like the "Body Snatchers" feel. Good job.

  3. Urban Fantasy

Because of the mind control at the airport

  6. Some kind of paranormal/fantasy. It's definitely not set in the 'real world'.

  7. Paranormal.

Hmm..just taking a stab. There are certainly clues that it's not contemporary:)

  8. Sci-fi.

    Sharing of skull, being nudged/controlled.

  9. paranormal/urban fantasy

Seems like some kind of possession. I ruled out horror since we know right up front that there is more than one entity inside the protagonist.

I wasn't pulled in until the last line: Insistent little miscreant, aren’t you? I would keep reading for that line alone.

  10. Paranormal because of the mc being periodically possessed.

  12. Horror.

    Because of the possession.

  13. Urban Fantasy

Hope the MC knows how to drive!

  14. Science Fiction?

Feels more science fiction than fantastical to me.

  15. Not Sure--

While Mabel's will is not quite her own, she's not horrified at it. She's annoyed, unpleasant, but words like "pestering" and "little miscreant" suggest a lighter frustration--almost a sarcastic humor.

  16. I'm not sure on this one. It feels like she has multiple personalities. Or maybe she's possessed, paranormal maybe?

  17. Fantasy. (although possibly scifi). Somebody else living in her skull and controlling her body . . .

Use of the word "it" to describe whatever she's sharing her skull with really threw me off and made this harder to read than it might have otherwise been. Would Mable have named the "it." Maybe if you captitalized "It"

  18. Interesting that she's sharing her head with an "it" rather than a he or she. Equally interesting that this "it" has a sense of panic and is keeping her on the run. A touch confusing that the it locked her limbs and then nudged her to move right after. I'm gonna go with modern sci-fi, since I feel like the it is some kind of alien entity (though I could be wrong).

  19. Science Fiction

I immediately thought paranormal first, but when I read it again it seemed more alien "body snatcher"-ish.

  20. Science Fiction

Could also be paranormal if her passenger is a demon, but the panic makes that seem unlikely. Shaping up to be SF along the lines of brain-switching, or alien telepathy.

  21. Can't tell if it's paranormal or science fiction. I guess it depends who is controlling her skull. But it's a good opening. Caught my attention.

  22. URBAN FANTASY

Interesting! I'd cut the "Dammit!" "Mabel silently swore" does the same job. Otherwise I have no nitpicks :-)

  23. Not sure.

Wasn't sure if the 'miscreant' was real(Fantasy or paranormal) or if it was psychological(Contemporary-as in schizophrenic personality disorder). Same problem with the arrival details, even "Airporter" doesn't really reveal enough given the surrounding general details.

  24. Paranormal

This woman is possessed by something that's forcing her on a journey.

  25. Paranormal

She's sharing her mind with someone/something else.

  26. PARANORMAL

The setting is modern day (airport), but an unknown entity has taken over the MC's body. One fantastical element in a real-world setting makes me think paranormal. (I'd also consider Urban Fantasy.)

  27. PARANORMAL

    Because possession...

  28. Genre is actually CONTEMPORARY FANTASY (usually lumped together with URBAN FANTASY).

Hopefully having the title would be enough of a clue for the reader in a more standard context. :\
