Name That Genre #19

TITLE: SECRET
GENRE: YA SECRET

Once upon a time, they called the city Hong Kong.

Mo called it a graveyard. Grey roads crisscrossing in a maze, one or two traffic lights sparking on and off. Skyscrapers, long abandoned, stood vigil over their fallen cousins. Mo whistled and the wind echoed her, rattling the windows. Half the window ledges were rusted, but Mo didn’t spare them a glance as she swung between them and up the building. She’d scaled the city’s skyscrapers for seven years.

With the right angle, the sunlight could reflect off the buildings and bathe the city in something other than grey. Thousands of mornings spent this high up, and Mo had yet to see that perfect sunrise.

The room stank. Mo knotted her grey shawl around her face. Every week, the coastguard and the witches agreed to a ceasefire and brought their corpses home. Before that, dozens of scavengers like Mo hurried to pick the place clean.

  1. Dystopian Fantasy

Set in the ruin of Hong Kong and there are witches.

  2. URBAN FANTASY
The setting is urban, and the witches at war with the coast guard is a scenario with an urban fantasy feel. There is an strong apocalyptic element.

  4. Urban Fantasy. She seems to have some sort of magical ability if she's easily scaling skyscrapers.

  5. Urban Fantasy

This was difficult to pin down, because I automatically thought Dystopian before the mention of witches. I'm definitely intrigued though!!

  6. Dystopian fantasy

With the destruction of Hong Kong that tells me its a futuristic/dystopian feel but the way the MC climbs sky scrapers and the mention of witches gives me a fantasy feel. LOVE this!

  9. Science fiction. Althougth the mention of witches almost made me change to fantasy. The setting felt futuristic or alternate so I stuck with scifi.

  10. Urban fantasy (The Originals kind of vibe)

I have a suggestion for your intro: The first two lines should have their own line.
Then in your first paragraph, the sentence "Mo whistled..." should be a new paragraph for clarity. Other than that, good intro! I would keep reading

  11. Fantasy

This was a tough one. Felt dystopian to me at first, but the witches made me think fantasy.

  12. Fantasy. I was first thinking dystopian, but if there are witches then it is probably a fantasy dystopia rather than a science fiction dystopia.
