Name That Genre! #29

TITLE: Adult
GENRE: Secret

Ling had been hunting dragons her entire life. Each dragon unique. How many had she hunted? Dozens? Hundreds? Maybe a thousand. Yes, at one time there were thousands of dragons, now perhaps a handful were left. At one time she hid from the dragons. Now they hid from her.

It had been years since she encountered a dragon. Her quarry sat a few feet away in the Ex Libris Cafe, radiating magic. Inexperience or overconfidence, she wasn’t sure which. He sipped some frothy espresso drink, blending in with the other college students perfectly. They always blended in. It was one of their talents. Well, it was also something Ling had mastered. She approached, confident the backpack and University of Chicago t-shirt were appropriate for the location.

“Hi, you’re in my physics class aren’t you?” She dropped her backpack on the floor and sat in the chair next to him.

  1. If we get this one wrong, we haven't had our coffee yet. Fantasy. And very interesting too. Good luck with this project!

  2. Urban Fantasy.
I like the unorthodox take on Dragons. Very intriguing.

Dragons. Dragons. Dragons. Okay, it's fantasy right? Wait. Espresso? College? Ah. Urban Fantasy. Sweet. :)

  8. Urban Fantasy.

And very intriguing. First thought was fantasy, but the bookstore, coffee drink and college set it firmly in the urban range.

  9. Fantasy. I'm sticking with fantasy. These are only the first 150 words and the story, with a dragon who blends in with college students at a bookstore, could go in a lot of directions.

    Intriguing story!

  13. Yup, yup. Urban Fantasy!
And my parents are both UofC alums, so this one is especially awesome.

The modern setting (coffee shop, University of Chicago) plus dragons says Urban Fantasy.

And very interesting. Dragons hiding in plain sight as humans! Nice. :)

  17. I'm going with Paranormal Romance.

It reminds me a bit of Eileen Wilks and a *smidge* of Thea Harrison.

  18. Fantasy

Because dragons. Intriguing possibility of star-crossed paranormal romance, though.

  19. Urban fantasy with strong romantic elements, I hope! Thinking that the main character is a female immortal (if she's had time to kill a thousand dragons), which is an interesting twist.

Please don't hate me, but my inner girly-girl is currently squealing, "what's the dragon guy look like? is he cute? does he have long hair? heehee!"

  20. Fantasy - dragons.

I was confused that the dragon could be hiding as a human. Unique idea, but that means you need to prepare the reader for that possibility before the dragon hunter calls a college student her quarry. I had to read it a few times to figure it out.

  21. URBAN FANTASY

The modern references made this suddenly interesting. Though I think the word "dragon" is way over-used in that first paragraph.

  22. Fantasy.

As a UChicago grad, it's good to finally know what those entities were at the cafes.

  23. Urban Fantasy

A dragon passing as a college student, sipping an espresso.

  26. Fantasy, with a contemporary feel. This seems intriguing, I'd probably read more. Good luck, Sarah
