Name That Genre! #28

TITLE: Adult
GENRE: Secret

“I always knew it would come to this,” came the voice, gravely and over dramatic.

“God,” I muttered, not quite under my breath, rolling my eyes while I continued with the knife slices.

“No, no really. Listen. I got it,” Mac continued excitedly. “When I began this journey, I could foresee the outcome long ago.”

“Really?” Seltzer called out from across the room. “A bit much for a doctor, don't you think?”

“You don't think they struggle with depression at all?”

"I don't know. Drug use, maybe. I never really thought about it. I suppose-"

"Will you two knock it off!" I yelled in frustration, my voice a bit louder then it should have been given the circumstances. "I'm working over here," I said, turning back to the job at hand.

"Sorry," came the synchronized muttering.

"We certainly didn't want to disturb the artist," said Mac, somewhat playfully.

  1. I can't tell.

I really have no idea what the genre of this one is going to end up being. Maybe contemporary? Science Fiction? I'm sorry, I don't know.

  2. I can't tell

There is no sense of setting

  3. I can't tell.

I'm pretty sure it's a modern setting but I suspect it might be a thriller/mystery/suspense. I just need a little more setting to confirm -- are they killing someone? Because that's what it seems like to me.

  4. I can't tell

Maybe they are killing someone or making a sandwich. For some unknown reason the part about 'them struggling with depression or drug use' made me think zombies

  5. I can't tell

I was thinking contemporary, but I can't be sure.

  6. Absolutely can't tell.

Slicing. Doctor. Odd names. I couldn't really follow the conversation at all.

  7. Can't tell. Medical drama maybe?
    Not really sure.

  8. No idea.

    Very confused.

  9. I'm going with contemporary based on dialog.

  10. I'm going with Women's Fiction because of the topic of depression/suicide -- even though the mc is trying to ignore it

  11. Can't tell

There is no sense of setting. The dialogue doesn't give enough details to fully grasp the meaning of what they are talking about. Feels like walking in on a conversation that is halfway through, the participants know what they are talking about, but I don't.

  12. Horror?

It feels sick and twisted in a way. Like the characters are cutting into bodies. Maybe they are cutting into bodies of a culture of people that are disposable.

  13. Mainstream.

    It's contemporary and realistic.

  14. Can't tell.

The details are so few and general, it could be almost anything.

  15. I haven't a clue. The names are not contemporary, but maybe I'm just out of touch with modern names. Good luck, Sarah

  16. I can't tell either, sorry.

  17. Thriller? Horror? Both?

I really can't tell because there's too much talking and not enough of anything else, but I feel like the MC is slicing into someone's brain or body and not for medical reasons. Being called an artist while they're slicing into a brain?...sounds gross.

  18. CONTEMPORARY SOMETHING

I don't know what the "something" is. It's a little scattered because of the dialogue and because there are so many characters. But the dialogue sounds modern, so I'll go with contemporary.

  19. Contemporary Dark Comedy is my best guess. I'm assuming the "knife slices" will turn out to be something bloody.

  20. No clue. Contemporary? Thriller? I got really confused reading this also. I would like more setting to get grounded in the scene.

  21. Can't Tell

Autopsy? Ritual? Torture? "Knife slices" is hard to place. The foresight thing doesn't narrow it down, either. At least, not yet.

  22. Paranormal based on the knife slices being considered artistic, even if mockingly. I don't think anyone of the three speaking are the doctor, I think they're talking about a doctor in the third person. I feel like they're involved in cleaning up a doctor's suicide. Dark humor, kind of intriguing but definitely difficult to decipher (please ignore the alliteration).

  23. I can't tell. I was confused about who was talking, where they are, and what the task at hand was. You need more action tags to break up the dialog and give the reader a change to figure out who everyone is.

  24. I CAN'T TELL

I don't feel grounded at all. The dialogue is mildly interesting (though there are way too many dialogue tags being thrown around), but because I have no idea what the MC is doing, I don't really care about what the others are talking about.

I'm guessing they're in the middle of a heist, but I'm probably projecting my own story types into this ;-)

  25. Contemporary

Eh... possibly near-historical? I don't know. Depression and drug use in doctors seems to be a pretty popular, modern stereotype, but here, they seem to be questioning it. But it's hard to find any real context in this conversation; it feels a bit on the talking head side.

  26. Mystery/Thriller

I'm guessing they're doing an autopsy on a doctor who supposedly committed suicide, but she'll find out it was really murder and set off to solve the crime.

  27. The answer: Thriller.

However, based on the answers, I'd like to change to "I don't know," or "Zombie Medical Thriller" (because that sounds like a lot of fun to write!).

My thanks to all the critters. It's hard to hear, but necessary. I have already started to rewrite the opening and (hopefully) make it that much better.

    Thanks again!
