#1 SECRET AGENT Are You Hooked?

Title: Darkest
genre: YA urban fantasy

Skeleton fingers claw at a purple sky.

Yeah. I think I remembered lightning. It used to scare the sh** out of me when I was little. But that was before I was blind.

Thunder rumbled the floor. Wind-whipped branches smacked the window. All I had was the soundtrack.

The storm had a message but I wasn't listening.

My scalp tingled above a dull headache. Jazz snuffled. If he were one of those bomb-sniffing dogs he could track down the stuff I lost. But he was only a guide dog, though I pushed that training to the max.

It's pretty hard to sneak stuff when you can't see what you're doing. But that didn't stop me from trying. Smoking was the only thing that calmed me down, these days. I slipped my hand under the mattress for my cigarette stash. Gone. The maid's way of telling me I was busted without ratting me out to Dad.

My things were scattered on the desk where I'd tossed them; phone, keys, matches. No cigarettes.
The dresser top was bare, but I thought I'd heard a rustle of movement. Probing the air, my fingers bumped against soft cylinders fanned out like spokes on a wheel and spun in a free-floating circle.

Cigarettes?

Heart racing, I felt around for suspension wires. Nothing. At my touch, one by one, the sticks plunked onto the dresser top.

Hell. I didn't want a cigarette anymore.

Okay, Ladies & Gentlemen: ARE YOU HOOKED?

And we begin! There are 113 entries. Yep, 113. (A prime number. Is this significant?)

Please read carefully:

1. Each submission will be posted separately. If your submission number DOES NOT MATCH the number I gave you when I sent your confirmation email, please let me know RIGHT AWAY.
2. Remember to critique! It's not "all about you." It's actually all about me. (No, not really...)
3. Keep an eye out for our Secret Agent. And be patient. The response was WAY bigger than I had anticipated. I would expect that our Secret Agent will need several days to get through all the submissions.
4. Be kind! Be tactful! And when you receive criticism on your own work, be gracious! Be open! This is how we learn, how we grow.
5. Remember, the main question for each entry is ARE YOU HOOKED? So try to begin your comments with a clear "YES" or "NO" to see whether the reader-hooking goal has been accomplished.

Are you ready? Posts will come up in numerical order, which means, of course, that they will be listed backward on the blog.

Gulp...here goes...

Submissions Are Now Closed

Completely, irrevocably, not-a-shred-of-mercy-if-your-submission-comes-in-one-minute-past-nine, closed.

I will finish my coffee, have a bit of non-blog life, and then the posting will begin.

Thank you for your courage and your kindness. And your patience. (I thought I'd throw that in ahead of time. You know, just in case I've done something really stupid during my cut-and-paste marathon.)

Authoress Is Languishing...

Where is my chaise lounge? My smelling salts?

No, forget the smelling salts. I don't want anyone to wake me.

Oh, I know! How about a nice glass of Shiraz? No, wait. It's too early in the morning.

Is it morning?

Okay, I'm exaggerating. May I just say that the response to our Secret Agent Are You Hooked? has been...unexpected? A bit on the large side? Unprecedented, perhaps, for a three-month-old, still-in-diapers blog?

The connectedness of aspiring authors online continues to amaze me.

I'm going to have to offer a smaller window of time for our next round of Secret Agent. ("Wait, did she say NEXT ROUND?")

Yes, she did. Oy vey.

You folks are awesome. In all the submissions thus far (80 and rising), I have only had to request a re-submit from two or three because of one problem or another (read: submission guidelines not followed). Nobody has been snarky. Lots of you have expressed thanks (you're welcome). And only one submission has landed in my spam box (I found it, we're good to go).

Yay!

Now, if someone can promise me that I'll get my life back after all this, I'll be content.

(Novel? What novel? Editing...what?)

All righty, back to the literary grindstone. If anyone wants to offer a nice back massage, feel free.

Call For Submissions: Can you hook a SECRET AGENT?

It's here! Our first Are You Hooked? featuring a Secret Agent is officially off and running.

Please read the submission guidelines carefully! Because I'm expecting an increase in submissions this time, I'm going to have to disqualify any submissions that don't follow the guidelines.

It's not that I don't love you. It's just that we need to "play fair."

Here are the guidelines (note: ONE submission per author, please):

*Submit the FIRST PAGE of a COMPLETED MANUSCRIPT in any genre EXCEPT erotica.
*Please make sure your word count does not exceed 250. Period.
*Expletives will be "bleeped" at my discretion.
*Include the TITLE and GENRE of your work.
*All posts will be anonymous. But please include a SCREEN NAME that will easily identify you (for the purpose of announcing the winner).
*Email your entry to facelesswords(at)gmail.com with ARE YOU HOOKED in the subject line. Please, no attachments.
*All entries MUST BE RECEIVED (time stamped) by Thursday, July 17, at 9:00 AM EDT.
*By submitting your work to me, you are giving implicit permission for me to post your work on this blog and to allow others to read and comment on your work.

I will begin posting the submissions on Thursday, July 17, after the contest has closed.

Post any questions here.

Now, how is this contest going to work, you ask?

A very kind literary agent from a reputable agency in NYC has graciously accepted my invitation to be our Secret Agent in the comment boxes. The Secret Agent will post feedback on each entry, so each participant will be receiving valuable input!

Here's the caveat: If you've entered the contest, you need to take the time to leave feedback for others. In fact, I'm feeling so adamant about this that I'm going to say: IF THE CHOSEN WINNER HASN'T LEFT AT LEAST FIVE CRITIQUES FOR OTHERS, THE PRIZE IS FORFEIT.

Ouch! But truly, I want to get across the importance of give-and-take here.

Our Secret Agent is going to choose one entry as the best. In other words, the winner will have effectively HOOKED our Secret Agent!

The winner will be announced on Monday, July 21. The fabulous prize, straight from the hands of our Secret Agent, will also be announced at this time. (Yep, I know what it is. Nope, I'm not telling.)

The identity of our Secret Agent will also be unveiled on the 21st.

I think that about covers it! I'm awfully excited about this, and look forward to reading your entries.

Sharpen your quills! Warm up your fingers! And best wishes to each of you.
