Name That Genre! #16

TITLE: Adult
GENRE: Secret

I couldn't take another night of this. Stuck in this cheap-a** hotel room, listening in on the galaxy's latest in WMD technology.

The stench of ozone thickened in the hallway outside my room, burning my nostrils. Followed by the smell of deep-fried tofu and the light footsteps of someone trained to move silently. They weren't succeeding. But then, I had excellent hearing.

Had I f***** up that bad already? Of course if they were here to terminate me, they hadn't gotten the memo. I was immune to poison.

I placed a mini holo projector on the desk to hide the scattering of equipment that connected me to Buki Technologies' and Bogu Enterprises' communications networks and the minivid player that stored all the data I had collected on the development of House Aquarius' newest weapon of mass destruction.

  1. Thriller with a dash of sci-fi/fantasy.

Listening to the galaxy, smelling ozone and fried tofu and hearing light footsteps set the scene nicely. The last paragraph drives it home for me.

  6. Sci-Fi

That last sentence is way too long and quite heavy in detail. Try to break it up or eliminate what isn't required.

    Good luck!

  7. Sci-Fi Thriller

Galaxy in the first sentence. The reference to WMD leads me to think it is dealing with contemporary themes in a science fiction settings. Interesting if done well.

  10. Sci-fi thriller, Liked the impervious to poison stance and the good hearing, although I wonder how one can hear a person sneaking up when listening to something else.

  11. Sci-fi thriller, right from the second sentence. Gritty, Blade Runner style world from the language. Guessing the main character is a spy (or a reporter a la Lois Lane but with good funding). Not sure how the MC immediately jumps to poison as his/her would-be assassin's choice. Also not sure why she's thinking in past tense in the italics. Really good atmosphere though, jumps right in.

  16. Science Fiction

    Galaxy, ozone, technologies.

I'm also really thinking dystopian. I can't really explain why I think that, other than I immediately thought of Blade Runner.

  17. SCIENCE FICTION

If it weren't for the word "galaxy," I'd say cyberpunk, but it sounds like this goes off-planet as well (though I guess cyberpunk does that sometimes too).

  18. SCIENCE FICTION
Right the word galaxy I am expecting science fiction and seeing the scene through that lens. It would be hard for me to change gears if I found out it wasn't.

Holo-projectors, enhanced hearing. And 'galaxy'. Likely also Thriller, as the mc supposes an attack.

  26. MILITARY SCI-FI

WMD's says military to me. It could be present day, but the unfamiliar technology and the reference to the galaxy (instead of the world) makes me think we aren't confined to Earth.
