2012 Baker's Dozen Agent Auction: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Since the first submission window is ONE WEEK AWAY, I thought it would be a good idea to put all the links to the contest information in one place.  So here you go:

SUBMISSION DATES AND GUIDELINES

THE PARTICIPATING AGENTS

THE PARTICIPATING EDITORS AND AUTHORS

And here are the genres that will be included (it's practically everything, but this is for those of you who want specifics):

ADULT CATEGORY:

Science Fiction
Fantasy
Urban Fantasy
Magical Realism
Steampunk
Romance (and all sub-genres EXCEPT erotica and erotic romance)
Thriller/Suspense
Mystery
Horror (including literary)
Literary
Women's
Commercial (I know, I know; very broad!)
Historical
Alternate Historical

(No religious/faith-based books.  Our participating agents do not represent them.)

YA/MG CATEGORY:

Science Fiction
Fantasy (and all sub-genres)
Contemporary
Thriller
Mystery
Horror
Romance
Historical

(No picture books or religious/faith-based books.  Our participating agents do not represent them.  If you want to submit a chapter book, it's with the understanding that most of our YA/MG agents do not represent them.  Naturally this will lower your odds of receiving bids if your entry is chosen as one of the top 60.)

Questions below!  I will answer as promptly as I can.

  1. What is the word count for the logline?
    Thx.

  2. No questions...just lots of excitement! :)

  3. I'm not entering, but I was wondering what a chapter book is in terms of YA/MG books?

  4. On the submission dates, are the max numbers filled by when the submissions come in or are these going to be selected by the bot (I assume there will be many more than 100/150 entries submitted per day)? Thanks for clarifying! I am very much looking forward to this.

  5. Alisa -- Chapter books are below MG, in that they are meant for independent early readers.

RedCard -- Submissions for the Baker's Dozen are NOT an auction; each entry pays a fee, so each entry is immediately added to the slush pile. Jodi Meadows and I will be reading every entry.

So the max number will be filled when that many entries have arrived. FWIW, last year the adult section did not max out.

  6. Thanks for the clarification, Authoress. I will be submitting early on the 30th!

  7. I have a historical cookbook that is completed. Are there any catagories I can list this in?

  8. I'm sorry, Roxanne; this auction is for works of fiction only.

  9. probably a stupid question, but what about YA paranormal?

  10. Nobody's asking for it by name (because of the glut), but it's technically a sub-genre of SF/F, yes? So it's not a firm "no". And several agents are listed as "YA, all genres," which covers everything. :)

  11. This is such a great thing you're doing. Thanks so much!

Like Anonymous, I'm wondering if there's a maximum word, character or sentence count for the logline?

    Thanks again!

  12. There's no way for the bot to differentiate between the logline and the excerpt. The total word count will be set at 325 for the contest. That is 255 for the excerpt and 70 for the logline. 70 is fairly long.

Actually, I may reduce that by 10.

At any rate, there you have it.

  13. Authoress - Can we submit if we didn't enter the Logline Critique, and to we pay when we are confirmed in, or pay and hope we're one of the 100?

Roxe Anne Peacock - I know of at least one small press that's publishing historical cookbooks and who might be interested in more. Check out Tyche Books and "What Kings Ate And Drank" by Krista D. Ball. I know it's not an agent, but you might find a home there.

  14. Hi, Liana (long time no see!)! Payment is part of the submission process; your submission will be confirmed once your payment has been received. Every confirmed entry will be read by Jodi and me.

Also, thanks for passing advice along to Roxe Anne! :)

  15. Authoress - I've been silently stalking the blog while I was editing, and finally have something to submit. :)

And I passed on the information because I like historical cookbooks and encourage them whenever I can. (Go, Roxe Anne!)

    *hugs*

  16. Well, YAY, Liana! And I actually own a pretty cool Medieval cookbook. Except, I haven't been brave enough to try anything yet. Especially "garbage pye". (Like, animal scraps. O_O)

  17. Hello Authoress...can you please confirm what the final logline word count limit will be? You mentioned above you may reduce it by 10. Thanks!

  18. Yes, and I will announce this prior to submissions next week. The total word count will be 315, which is 255 for the excerpt and 60 for the logline.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So is it OK to fudge it a little as long as the total count doesn't exceed 315? Like if you have 62 words in your logline and 252 in the excerpt? :)

  20. sgf -- I have no way to police the fudging. ;D

  21. How much of a mention of faith, loss of faith, qualifies as too religious? Is any reflection by a character too much?
I'm afraid I might have to miss this auction (which I've been very excited about.) I don't consider it a "Christian" novel but the MC questions his ideas of God.

  22. Anonymous, I'd be sorry to see you not venture into the fray. Just wanted to toss that out there.

  23. Anon -- Having an MC question his ideas about God does not make it a "Christian" novel. If you would not pursue CBA publication with this novel; if you do not see this novel exclusively on the shelves of Christian bookstores and in the "faith" section of mainstream bookstores, then your book is not "faith-based."

  24. I'm worried about my power going out because of Sandy. I can probably find someone to submit my info but how long do we have to pay by paypal? I don't feel comfortable giving that info out to anyone, even a friend, and although I still have power, my power supplier is already warning us that if it does go out, it might be a week before we get it back.

  25. Nicole -- I will be posting this info soon, but I will be opening an emergency submission window if needed on account of the storm. So no worries.

    :)
