Call For Submissions: First Sentences

It was so much fun the last time, we're going to do it again!

Send THE FIRST TWO SENTENCES of your story (novel or short, finished or unfinished) to facelesswords(at)gmail.com. I'll post them on Wednesday and we'll see how well our first two sentences hook readers!

No title, no genre. Just the first two sentences, carefully polished and ready to go.

(Note: If you entered our last F2S crit session, PLEASE don't submit the same two sentences! Choose the opening sentences from another work, or sit this one out.)

Submissions will be open until Wednesday, December 3, at 9:00 am EST.

Okay, send 'em in!

  1. Can I use the same story I used last time if the opening sentences are completely different? (Not just revised, but starts at a new place.)

  2. Yep, that's totally okay. I just wanted to avoid exact duplicates from last time. :)

  3. Cool! I revamped my whole opening paragraph, so this is a great opportunity to get feedback on the new opening. Same story, though.

  4. I'm going to send in the first two lines of my NANO for feedback. Uhm. Beware?

  5. I'd like to see the first paragraph done sometime, Authoress. That's about how far I read to decide if I like the writing.

It offers so much more possibility for development than two sentences.

  6. Thanks for doing this! I just sent mine in. Mine is also from my NaNo manuscript.

    :)

  7. Should I submit my first two lines from my prologue or my first chapter? I know most people don't read the prologue... but it is technically the beginning. :)

  8. Thanks for doing this! I just sent mine in.

  9. Amanda -- you may send it a second one, but only because I'm feeling chipper. :) The normal rule is "one entry per person." This is a shortie, though, so go ahead.

Dana -- that's up to you. Send whichever you feel would benefit from feedback.

  10. Are we allowed to enter more than one?

  11. Hello Authoress! I sent in two as well, under two different emails to help ease the confusion. Thanks for doing this!

  12. Funness! And with NaNo finally over I can play. B-) Sent in the lines, and am looking forward to seeing everyone else's!

  14. If at a later date the manuscript that the two sentences belong is sold, do we still have our full copyright? And, if so, will you delete the post the two sentences are in?

  15. Posting 2 sentences from a manuscript does not in any way affect copyright.

I will, of course, delete anything that anyone requests, so long as you find it for me. :)

  16. Am I supposed to/allowed to/not allowed to post on my own entry? Not to say how brilliant and yet modest it is, of course... but is it okay for me to identify myself?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sure, Heather! The anonymity is merely a courtesy to the writers. You may certainly identify yourself if you want to. :)

  18. Thanks muchly. So far the comments on mine are mostly positive, which does make it easier to ID myself. :)
